What’s the difference between a PA and a physician?

Physician Assistants have been part of the health care system since the 1960’s.
Like physicians, PAs are trained in medicine, and in someprograms PAs attend many of the same classes as medical students. Both professions are educated to detect diseases and treat them, andto assist patients in living healthier lifestyles.  A major differencebetween PA education and physician education is the amount of time spent in their formal education.  In addition, physicians are required todo an internship after graduation from medical school, and the majority of physicians complete a residency in a specialty following their internship.  PAs are not required to undertake an internship orresidency.  However, all PAs participate in clinical rotations as part of their physician assistant education.  The PA works as a member ofhis or her supervising physician’s team.

A PA is  licensed health professional that works under thesupervision of a physician. A PA-C  has undergone testing by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
